When it comes to packing up your belongings and moving abroad, it's a time to clean out your life! I gave car loads of 'stuff' away to charity when I packed up to move this time. The longer you've been living in a place, the more 'stuff' you seem to accumulate.
Many international schools will include a shipping allowance as part of the contract package, but some don't. Either way, chances are you're going to want to take more than you can carry on the plane.

If you can't afford a full service where the shipping agents come into your house and pack everything for you then you'll have to pack your belongings yourself. Use good quality boxes in order to ensure that your precious belongings arrive in one piece. I know, from experience, how heartbreaking it can be to finally have your stuff arrive only to find that some of it has been damaged. Please, pack your belongings carefully!

In addition to wrapping my stuff in bubble wrap, I also pack breakables in the middle of boxes so that they have clothing all around them to provide extra protection.

As I go through my house I make different piles according to what I'm going to do with the stuff that I'm not packing. I usually have a pile to take with me on the plane (this gets weeded as it gets larger!), a pile for giving away to friends, one for stuff I'm going to give to colleagues at school, one for charity and one for stuff I'm throwing out. Then as I go along I slowly find that it all gets organised and sorted almost automatically.

Keep an inventory of what you're putting in each box for insurance purposes and also to preserve your sanity when you start wondering if you packed something. Once your boxes are sealed, you don't want to be unsealing them to check what's inside!
